Free Events in London

There are a whole host of free events organised in London, ranging from music, film and theatre to walks and talks. This page lists some of the best places to go for free events of various types. It is not intended to be comprehensive but I will be building on it over time so do add a comment if you have any further suggestions.

Music
The Southbank Centre (SE1) - Live music on Friday evenings, Friday and Sunday lunchtimes and occassionally at other times, particulalry over the summer. Music includes jazz and blues, folk and some classical.

National Theatre (SE1) - Pre-performance concerts in the foyer Monday to Saturday evenings (5.45pm), lunchtime on Saturdays (1.45pm) and some Sundays. Wide range of different music including folk, swing and funk. In the summer, the foyer music is only on Mondays and Tuesdays and there are Watch this Space activities in the square outside instead, many of which involve music.

The Scoop (SE1) - Music every lunchtime (12.30-14.00) and evening (18.30-21.30) on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from late June and throughout July. The AllStars Collective regular Friday evening slot is a great way to finish the week and guaranteed to have most people dancing by the end.

LSO St Lukes (EC1) - The London Symphony Orchestra offers regular concerts of classical music from some of the newer members of the orchestra on Friday lunchtimes. There are also a few lunchtime outdoor music concerts over the summer months where people are invited to bring a picnic lunch to eat whilst listening to the music. In 2011 these include folk, world music and a capella.

Theatre
West End Live (WC1) - An annual celebration of the big West End shows with an emphasis on musicals. Includes performances from around 20 hit shows such as The Lion King, Mamma Mia! and War Horse. It is usually in Leicester Square but in 2011 will be in Trafalgar Square on 18 and 19 June.
The Scoop (SE1) - A range of different performances each summer usually during June and August. 2011's productions include a version of Macbeth inspired by graphic novels, a contemporary take on The Canterbury Tales and a play about rival tour guides competing with each other (Citiest of Cities). Wrap up warm and take a cushion.

Film
Free Film Festivals (SE15) - Free film festival in September in Peckham and Nunhead  (this year's is 9-18 September) plus occasional other events in South London throughout the year (e.g. they recently screened Slumdog Millionaire in Burgess Park).

The Scoop (SE1) - Open air film screenings every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the last two weeks in September. 2011's offerings include a mixture of relatively recent releases (The King's Speech, True Grit and The Social Network) and old favourites (Dirty Dancing, Grease and The African Queen).

Talks and Lectures
Gresham College (EC1) - This college which was established over 400 years ago offers over 100 free public events every year on topics including mathematics, philosophy, history and politics.

Museum of London - Daytime talks by museum curators, conservators and archeaologists on the last Wednesday of every month, often related to a current exhibition.

National Gallery (WC1) - Regular talks exploring various of the works on display in the gallery. Some are 'talk and draw' or 'talk and create' where materials are provided to allow participants to make a piece of art in response to the talk.

Gallery/Museum Tours
Museum of London - 30 minute tours of the museum offered several times a day.

National Gallery (WC1) - 60 minute guided tours providing an introduction to the permanent collection (General tours at 11.30am and 2.30pm every day plus 7pm on Friday and themed tours at certain other times).

The Women's Library (E1) - Occasional guided tours of their collection including one of their zine collection (advance booking required).

There's also a useful facility on the Time Out website allowing you to search for free events although not everything I've covered here is listed there.
